Mothers & Infants
Summit 2009
 
Promoting Action for a Healthy Start
 
Was held on: Friday November 20, 2009
8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
 
Right to Thrive: Healthy Mothers & Infants was a summit to promote the successful development of the Zero to Three Population. Two hundred professionals, parents, students, and community leaders came together to educate each other and share their experiences. The group observed panel discussions by parents and providers. Attendees were also given the opportunity for Q&A with the panelists.
 
Following the panels, breakout sessions were held. The breakouts highlighted the topics of advocacy, funding, basic needs, early literacy, child abuse prevention, and safe sleep. The end of the day was filled with information regarding opportunities on how each attendee can continue to be active for these young children.
 
Provided below is some of the information that was given out in each of the individual break-out sessions:
 
1. Funding: Supporting Programs that Make A Difference
This session addressed funding issues for the Zero to Three populations. Programs with strong supporting data were described and outlined. Future trends for funding, including Federal and State legislative budgets, were explored. Jeff Sadler, Children's Trust Fund, Zero to Three.
 
2. Advocacy: Promoting Action for a Healthy Start
Statistics were presented that included specific risk factors for babies and moms. Steps were outlined and discussed for advocacy in your community. Participants were given the tools to understand and implement policy action. Michele Corey; Alicia Quintero, Michigan's Children; Kurt Metzger, Detroit-Area Community Indicators System, CEO.
 
3. Preconception Health Promotion: A Focus for Women's Wellness
This session defined and addressed the importance of preconception health and its impact on pregnancy outcomes. It explored the rationale behind pre-pregnancy health, provided guidance on preconception risk identification, and outlined approaches to promoting preconception wellness. Community services available to assist uninsured women in receiving health care were highlighted. Cami Purifoy, Infant Mortality Program; Sharon Wallace, Infant Mortality Program Founder.
 
4. Basic Needs: Tapping into Our Community Safety Net
 Children require food, shelter, physical safety and emotional security in order to thrive. This session included an informative panel session and learned from networkers and service providers. They also provided information on how to access these vital needs. Elaine Koons, Great Start Collaborative-Wayne; Lorraine Hurst, Department of Human Services.
 
5. Early Literacy: Stimulating the Young Brain
Three early literacy programs were explored including IMPACT: Inspiring Mentors, Parents and Children Together. Useful activities and techniques related to strengthening the young brain and children's literacy skills will be shared. This was a fun hands-on and interactive workshop. 6. Child Abuse Prevention/ Child Safety: Protecting our Most Vulnerable
Child abuse and neglect cases rise as stress on our families increases. This session featured presentations on Safe Sleep, Shaken Baby Prevention, along with community education and awareness of the most critical issues for parents with young children and babies.
