Jumpstart Dearborn

University of Michigan-Dearborn & Henry Ford Community College

Jumpstart Dearborn is a partnership of Child's Hope, UM-Dearborn and Henry Ford Community College (HFCC). Since 2004, Jumpstart Dearborn has worked to pair college mentors with at-risk children in area preschools.

Our Volunteers

Jumpstart volunteers are students from UM-D and HFCC. Each volunteer engages in one-to-one mentoring of an at-risk preschooler in order to prepare them for kindergarten success through pre-literacy and social skill development. Over the year, students dedicate 300 hours of service, which includes team building and interacting one-to-one with their child. Eligible students may select Jumpstart as their work-study assignment.

Service Commitment

Jumpstart volunteers are also members of the national service organization, AmeriCorps. Upon successful completion of 300 hours, the students receive a $1,000 stipend to be used for academic purposes.

In addition to working with their partner children, Jumpstart volunteers perform a minimum of 25 hours of community service, such as family literacy nights, Martin Luther King Service Day events, soup kitchen duties, and cooperating with other AmeriCorps volunteer groups during a Habitat for Humanity build.
