Child's Hope held its first Blue Ribbon Walk for
Kids on April 19th, 2008 to raise awareness about child abuse and
neglect. The Walk was part of a statewide initiative sponsored by the
Children's Trust Fund and Prevent Child Abuse America. April is Child Abuse
Prevention Month, and the Blue Ribbon Walk was Child's Hope's
contribution to this year's campaign.
The event took place at Heritage Park in Taylor.
There was plenty to do that day, including face painting and crafts provided by
our Jumpstart mentors, calisthenics demonstrated by City Year, entertainment by
the State Police's ten-foot-tall Walkabout Trooper, and of course food! There
was also a raffle for some great prizes, including Gift Certificates,
Children's Trust Fund merchandise, and a Sony Home Theater System valued at
$400! Over 150 people attended, and great fun was had by all!

Child's Hope, the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Wayne County
hosted the third annual Hopes and Dreams "Girl's Night Out" fundraiser event on
September 27, 2007. Over 300 guests were dressed in their finest, an orchestra
was playing in the background, fine wines were being sipped, and an elegant
dinner was served. Guests were invited to shop at an Artist Market hosted by
local artists and were treated to a peek at the latest fall looks in a fashion
show by Neiman Marcus. The greatest outcome of the whole event was that all
proceeds went to Child's Hope to fight child abuse.
This year's honorary chairperson was Alberta Muirhead. As a
life-long supporter of children, Mrs. Muirhead also supports numerous
organizations as a philanthropist. She is well known locally for the department
store she and her husband founded in Dearborn. Anne Doyle kept the evening
moving as the Mistress of Ceremonies. Anne is the former director of North
America Communications for Ford Motor Company before starting her own company:
Anne Doyle Strategies for Leaders.
The event was a huge success, almost doubling the support of last
year's event. A special thanks to the host committee for organizing this
wonderful event; the Fairlane Club, this year's new venue; the Dearborn Youth
Symphony for providing ambience; Communicore; Elston's Speedy Printing; Neiman
Marcus, Steven Bernard Jewelers, Ltd., Ciao Restaurant, óm Spa, Luxury
Limousine, the Ritz-Carlton Dearborn, and Comerica Bank for donating raffle
prizes; and, of course, all of the Sponsors, Founding Friends, Patrons and
donors who all contributed to this wonderful occasion.
The proceeds from Hopes and Dreams will provide training and
resources to educators, Head Start teachers, and childcare providers on
identifying the signs of child abuse and how to report it. The organization
also provides My Body Is Mine, a training for preschoolers, and other classes
for young parents.

Child's Hope held its 2007 Summit on November 30,
2007. The day-long conference, held at the University of Michigan-Dearborn,
brought together 350 people, including policy makers, business representatives,
service providers (educators, health care & mental health professionals,
law enforcement agencies, courts, foster care families and agencies, etc.),
foundations, faith communities, consumers of the foster care system, civic
organizations, and others.
Speakers for the event came from a wide variety of
backgrounds and included Ishmael Ahmed, Director of Michigan's Department of
Human Services, State Representative Hoon-Young Hopgood, Chief Judge Mary Beth
Kelly, Justice Maura Corrigan, Ben Wolf of the Illinois ACLU, and Gary
Anderson, Director of the Michigan State University School of Social Work. Over
twenty community resources were exhibited during program breaks. The day ended
with breakout sessions which addressed the topics of Improving Service
Delivery, Building Community Supports, Advocacy for Legislative Action, and
Building Community Awareness.
The work of the Summit continues with the Follow-Up
meeting scheduled for February 9, 2008. At this meeting, the direction of the
coalition will be decided and an action plan for the future will be designed.
